REUSE OF "URBAN VOID" IN KAISARIANI
ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN CONCEPT
The work concerns the use of an "urban void" in Kaisariani. A notable provision of the area is the University Campus, which hosts numerous students.
Either
for practical reasons, related to the comfort of the apartments they live in, or to contribute to their psychology during study hours, the choice of using
of this open-air space is for an outdoor study area in a natural environment. It is proposed to plant trees along the central area on both sides, as
and in the area perpendicular to it, to improve the bioclimatisation and the positive psychosomatic effect on the users. A pergola in the form of a pergola shall be installed
pavilion, giving the feeling of an open, defined space. It occupies almost the entire width and no benches are placed outside it, so that the use of the space is specific and there is no intrusion.
A relaxation area is located on the vertical side with tree planting, flower beds and benches. The textures chosen
are natural. Plants, wood laminated for weather resistance and compacted soil in the ground.
The placement of a single bench and seat
has as its central idea the socialization between students. A canteen and toilets were created in a small space located vertically and centrally of this area.
The project is handicapped friendly, as part of the single seat is interrupted for wheelchair access and toilets
a disabled toilet is included. The history of the site as a district of refugees of the Asia Minor Catastrophe is reflected visually, in the blind facades of the buildings that
enclosing the aperture, while at the same time solving this insensitive part of the space.
